The Music Department at NLCS aims to provide a broad range of musical opportunities for all students and strive for ambitious music making.
In Years 7-9, the girls are given a general musical education with the aim of introducing some of the basic repertoire, composition techniques and historical background. Classes are designed to cater to all levels of musicianship and give an opportunity for students to listen, perform and compose as individuals and in groups.
For girls studying music in the Upper School, we focus on three core disciplines – listening, performing and composing in preparation for the IGCSE. Students also compose at least 2 pieces of music and are assessed on solo and ensemble performance.
In the Sixth Form, girls develop their existing knowledge and specialise in the disciplines associated with musical history/analysis, composition, performance, harmony and counterpoint whilst at the same time providing each student with some flexibility and choice.
Each year a number of girls go on either to study at top conservatories or to take prestigious choral scholarships at Oxbridge colleges.
We strive to play ambitious music and in recent years, the senior choir has performed Mozart Requiem; Bach Magnificent and Vivaldi Gloria. The orchestra has performed the 1st movement of Dvorak’s Ninth symphony and Bizet Carmen suite. In 2012, 44 girls toured Tuscany performing Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
There are also opportunities for our most advanced musicians to play a concerto with the orchestra and every Tuesday, a lunchtime concert is given by any girl who wishes to play a solo.
Music scholarships are available in Year 7 and most of our scholars get the opportunity to play in our extensive chamber music programme. All chamber music ensembles are entered into the South East Schools chamber music competition and many have won awards at the finals which are performed at St John Smith Square.
Over the years, we have given joint concerts with Harrow School and formed a partnership with the London Handel Players, playing in St Lawrence’s church, Whitchurch Lane as part of the London Handel Festival.
